Who We Are...

Urban Organics is a cooperatively owned and operated organic farm in beautiful Encinitas, California, just 15 minutes north of San Diego. Our mission is to be a leader in sustainable, 100% organic produce farming, promoting healthy community-based food production and distribution.

We provide products in two different market areas: 1) wholesale foodservice distribution and 2) consumer.

Restaurants and Markets

Reflecting the average consumer's ever-growing eco consciousness, shoppers and diners are more than ever before requesting that their produce be grown locally and without pesticides. According to the USDA, the sale of organic agricultural products increased by 20 percent each year throughout the 1990's and is predicted to grow 9 to 16 percent annually through 2010. Gone are the days when markets and restaurants could expect to make consumers happy with good service and low prices. Now it is crucial that business provide products that are aligned with the globally sustainable motives of their clientele. We at Urban Organics are committed to not only responding to this market trend but also actively promoting it. A major part of our business involves providing local markets and restaurants with organically grown produce. And our marketing department is committed to growing the community of business offering sustainably grown produce.

Consumer Sales

Along with our wholesale business clientele, we are excited to be able to provide our fresh organically grown produce directly to consumers. In our ever more complex industrialized world, it’s a rarity that end consumers have a direct business relationship with the farmer that grew their food. It’s commonplace for food to be produced on one side of the world and then trucked, flown, shipped or otherwise transported thousands of miles via untold numbers of distributors to reach the consumer. With Urban Organics we allow consumers to not only provide their family with the finest organically grown produce, but also almost completely eliminate their carbon footprint by dramatically reduce the distance their food has to travel prior to consumption.

What is a Co-op?

Cooperatives:

-Are owned and democratically controlled by their members — the people who use the co-op's services or buy its goods — not by outside investors.

-Co-op members elect their board of director from within the membership.

-Return surplus revenues (income over expenses and investment) to members proportionate to their use of the cooperative, not proportionate to their "investment" or ownership share.

-Are motivated not by profit, but by service-to meet their members' needs for affordable and high quality goods or services;

-Exist solely to serve their members.

-Pay taxes on income kept within the co-op for investment and reserves. Surplus revenues from the co-op are returned to individual members who pay taxes on that income. Urban Organics is a Worker Cooperative

—That means we are owned and governed by the employees of the business. So you can be sure that every time you come to our farm the owner is serving you!
